Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the effects generated by a Watsu method intervention in a group of 11 competitive swimmers (6 men and 5 women), aged between 13 and 21 years.
Method: In order to achieve this objective, all the participants in this study received 20 sessions of the Watsu method during 20 weeks. The Watsu method sessions were added to the swimmers' training routine, without altering the work initially designed for the athletes who participated in the research. For data analysis, quantitative (e.g. questionnaires) and qualitative (e.g. diaries) instruments and procedures were used throughout the intervention process.
Results: The results showed that the participants of this research interpreted the Watsu method as a valid and necessary tool to improve physical and psychological aspects inside and outside the sport environment.
Conclusions: In short, it is concluded that the Watsu method can help to improve the level of relaxation, rest and body awareness of those athletes who are exposed to a high level of sporting and/or competitive demands.
