Abstract

As we indicated some time ago (Moreno & Gutiérrez, 1998), the role played by aquatic activity in the life of human beings is becoming increasingly important. Among the reasons that justify the choice of the aquatic environment is the possibility of favouring physical education within the process of integral education and the acquisition of other skills different from those acquired in the terrestrial environment. Another attraction of the aquatic environment is the wealth of new sensations that are already appreciated, even by young children. The fact is that the aquatic environment is a source of the most varied sensations: noises, smells, dimensions, buoyancy, fluidity, weightlessness, etc., and although some of these can be perceived in other places, the perception of the "sense of water" would not be achieved, and in the same way, the motivation that these activities provoke in people would be stifled. Moreover, this medium favours the externalisation of sensory, affective and cognitive behaviours, which will help people to feel at ease in the water and, in the same way, to enjoy the relaxation brought about by the specific properties of the aquatic medium...
