Abstract

Background: It accepted that the practice and teaching of swimming in Mexican children are based on a technical and sporting approach; however, there is no analysis of the offer and existing programs.

Objetives: Evaluate the offer, the demand to a mixed technical-educational program and the academic teaching profile of companies dedicated to swimming and water activities in preschool and school population.

Method: Keywords were used to discriminate the offer in: service or program one and the later between technical or educative, the number of enrollments by levels in mixed technical-educational program and proportion of teachers with academic education.

Results: Services were prioritized at similar level (48%) compared to the offer of programs (52%). Within the offer of program, it was a greater tendency towards the offer of technical programs in relation to technical-educational programs. In relation with technical-educated program analysis, the 72% of the children were enroled in levels with playful methodology and the remaining 28% participate in levels with technical progressions. In relation to the academic level of teachers; 19% of them have a university level.

Conclusions: In conclusion, almost 50% of the offer does not give importance to the programs. Likewise, the teaching of swimming and aquatic activities presents a technical tendency as opposed to educational, presents a profound lack of pedagogical knowledge, transforming the learning of swimming into a technical and utilitarian learning.

Keywords: Offer, programs, swimming, water activities, methodology, teacher training.
