Communication and Journalism in Cities: New Spaces for Innovation, Diplomacy and Sustainability in the Urban Configuration

Cities, above states and supranational organizations, are emerging as the new spaces of power and, therefore, as disruptive scenarios for innovation, where media and journalists are acquiring a more protagonist character and a more global projection from more local positions, avoiding losing the close connection with citizens and proximity information.

These dynamics, with a tone increasingly focused on sustainability, are carried out through public diplomacy strategies that favor non-centralized actors and instances. Thus, cities become independent from the monopoly of the States, favoring a scenario where media and journalists try to join in the framework of the promotion and/or analysis of such processes.

In the 'post-COVID19 era' new actors and new narratives are bursting into this scenario, which makes it necessary to rethink the model of cities that is sought and the decisive role that communication, and especially journalism, play in this process.

Below, we propose some general, non-determining guidelines to address this issue:

- Innovation linked to the field of communication in new urban contexts.
- Involvement of new technological advances in the development of new journalistic narratives.
- Involvement and participation of different creative agents in the transformation of cities: role of minorities in the urban context.
- Journalism in the face of these transformations: capabilities, changes and evolution in the local news model
- Media and journalists facing the transformation of cities: interpretations and dialogues.
- Role of local journalism in the framework of urban transformations
- Narratives generated by the media with emphasis on urban scenarios.
- Journalism in the face of "virtual cities" and a new urban-cultural fabric in the context of the metaverse
- The SDGs on the agenda of local media and journalists
- Public diplomacy, media and journalists in the context of new cities as centers of power.
