Abstract

In this article we will analyse the movie Funny Games (Michael Haneke, 1997). In particular, that scene in which Peter and Paul, the main characters of the movie, flighty explain to the assaulted family why they commit crimes. We are particularly interested in the relationship that psychopaths have with language. Are they capable of giving a satisfactory answer to the family interested in discovering why they are engaged in misdeeds? In order to address this mysterious question, we will make use of a quantitative methodology based on the case study of the scene and we will take semiotics and psychoanalysis as our theoretical framework. The hypothesis that we handle is that there is a form of violence that defies the laws of reason due to the lack of linguistic support capable of facing it. We also try to discover the relationship between Umberto Eco’s theory of the subject and Slavoj Žižek’s one.
