Local hoaxes: typology, subject matter, sources of dissemination and denial of local hoaxes in Alicante during covid-19.
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research analyses the types, themes, sources of dissemination and denials of local hoaxes registered in the province of Alicante between February and November 2020. A mixed methodology is proposed that combines the detection and classification of local hoaxes and their quantitative interpretation with qualitative analysis. The hoaxes were disseminated via instant messaging and social networks and, occasionally, by official sources. Contrary to the idea that local hoaxes are unsubstantiated rumours, the findings demonstrate their consistency and ability to extrapolate other hoaxes to the local level, even supplanting reliable sources. Denials tend to be competent as they occur early on, although often through different channels to the original. However, there is a methodological limitation inherent in the identification of hoaxes: we do not know how many hoaxes remain unproven, which highlights the importance of implementing local fact-checking systems.
