FOREWORD. Society and Identity in Latin American and Spanish Audiovisuals
Main Article Content
Abstract
Throughout the 20th century, the audiovisual media have been the most powerful builders of social and identity imaginaries. In the 21st century, the reality of globalisation, the generalisation of the Internet and social networks and the emergence of online consumption platforms have exponentially boosted the cultural exchange of these imaginaries. This has given rise to a global culture that paradoxically brings together homogeneity and diversity. As Mercado and Hernández Oliva (2010, p. 229) explain, ‘the process of globalisation has generated, on the one hand, new identities as a result of the opening of borders and, on the other, the vindication of their own identity by certain groups that are reluctant to abandon their culture’.
