Asian film trends. Analysis of the filmography of Chung Mong-Hong(鍾孟宏 / Zhōng Mèng-hóng)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Film practice in Asia is of interest in the West, and specifically in the area of film studies, where it has not yet been explored in depth. This study is aimed at analysing the trends in East Asian Cinema, focusing on Taiwanese cinema through the analysis of the filmography of Chung Mong-hong in the period 2008-2019, one of its representatives and heir to the New Taiwanese Cinema of the late 20th century.
This film analysis is based on a qualitative methodology divided into two phases: an initial bibliographical review of the scientific literature, and in parallel, a study of the proposed filmography was carried out, applying our own analysis tool, structured in two blocks. First, the thematic issues of Chung Mong-hong's work were analysed. Subsequently, the formal issues were observed and identified. Finally, we aimed to identify some of the commonalities of East Asian film practices and possible causes in relation to Taiwanese auteur cinema. The findings include the influence of classical film noir and the obsession with framing, combined with stylised photography, in which saturated colour and contrast generate a distinctive visual style approached by a number of East Asian auteurs. Furthermore, the system of co-productions in the region's film industry is relevant, with Taiwan being one of the most active in co-productions with Western countries and the second most active in co-productions with mainland China, which facilitates the emergence of common trends in the cinema of the different East Asian countries.
