Geolocation tools for the local press in Spain
Main Article Content
Abstract
Spanish local journalism has recently developed applications for mobile phones that use geolocation tools. These initiatives open the possibility of exploring new media environments, identifying emerging directions and opportunities for local journalism, in order to develop more personalized and competitive services. We study how the emergence of location-based technologies brings new possibilities to the local journalism sector in Spain. We aim to provide local editors with information to improve user collaboration and news publishing activities, exploiting the possibilities that mobile phones provide to local journalists. We present a guideline, constituted by 15 indicators, to assess how local news mobile apps have incorporated geo-localization tools to improve their services. Finally, we analyze, by means of the proposed criteria, several of the most representative mobile phone applications. Although the use of geolocation services may be key for the future of the local journalism sector in Spain, we still find deficiencies in their proper use.
