Artificial intelligence in the fight against disinformation in the Brazilian presidential election 2022
Main Article Content
Abstract
The strong polarisation between two political groups in the 2022 Brazilian elections forced a second round and culminated in the most balanced electoral result in history. This situation provided an even more complex disinformation environment than in previous presidential elections, with artificial intelligence (AI) playing a leading role in the production and dissemination of false information, so-called fake news. However, AI was also used to detect, verify and check disinformation content, in an attempt to balance the forces. This work aims to analyse this second case, i.e. the action taken by bots of goodagainst evil. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies were used to analyse the actions of two Brazilian portals - Aos factos and Lupa - in combating false information related to the second round between Lula and Bolsonaro. The results show that the apps' biggest bet was fabricated content, i.e. produced in a false way, using the media's name and design to give the pieces credibility. It was also concluded that the bots and the journalistic teams of the two portals were efficient at capturing, verifying, checking and truthfully reporting previously manipulated content.
