Abstract

Turning Red, in words of its director Domee Shi, aims to honor Asian culture by combining Western and Eastern animation styles with clear inspiration from classic anime from the 90s and early 2000s.

With the aim of analyzing the Asian representation in the film, we will analyze the references and inspirations then undoubtedly to Turning Red in one of the films with a more different animation within the studio. Coming to the conclusion that in recent years Disney has decided to bet on stories starring more diverse characters and make other types of realities visible and the movie Turning Red is one of its clearest examples. It is the first Disney/Pixar film written, produced and directed by women and also the company’s first film to focus on the changes experienced by a teenage girl speaking matter-of-factly about topics such as menstruation, puberty or parents over protectors.

Author Biography

Augusto Almoguera Fernández, Estudiante de Doctorado en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Graduated in Audiovisual Communication at the Ciudad de la Luz Study Center of the Miguel Hernández
University, he later completed a master's degree in direction and production at the Nebrija University
and is currently a doctoral student at the Complutense University of Madrid. She works as a communication
technician in the Association of Business Women of the Province of Alicante (AEPA). He has worked in the
press and communication departments of the Miguel Hernández University, Instituto Cervantes and
Diputación de Alicante. He has been a teacher of audiovisual workshops and assistant director
in the series «Vis a vis». He has directed two short films “Yo, sirena (2021)” and “Noche de brujas”
(2016) and participates in the organization of the Helena Cortesina Short Film Festival and the
La casa del reloj Short Film Festival.
