A Socio-Metaphorical Analysis of the Media Discourse on the Great Recession in La Vanguardia
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research analyses, from a socio-metaphorical perspective, the journalistic narrative of La Vanguardia, the leading newspaper in Catalonia, in its coverage of the 2008 crisis known as the Great Recession. The objective is to examine how the newspaper constructed the narrative through which it represented a reality that extended beyond the economic sphere and had profound effects on individuals and society as a whole.
Using content analysis as the methodological framework, the study examines both news and opinion pieces published in La Vanguardia. Central to the research is the identification and analysis of metaphors used in the newspaper’s discourse. The findings suggest that these metaphors contribute to framing the Spanish banking system bailout in humanitarian terms. Their significance lies not only in their content but also in their strategic placement in prominent textual features such as headlines and lead summaries.
