Abstract

Visual tone is a simple and effective resource that audiovisual filmmakers have used in their works to convey emotions to the viewer through the contrast between light and shadow. However, there was an avant-garde cinematic movement that imbued visual tone with dramatic, narrative, and symbolic connotations that remain relevant to this day. This is German Expressionism, whose long shadow we will trace through the analysis of several scenes from iconic films, placing special emphasis on the impact of light and shadow from the very conception of the script. The intention is to articulate theory, analysis, and practice of audiovisual work through the study of visual tone.

Author Biography

Noé Sotelo Herrera, National Autonomous University of Mexico

Doctor en Teoría, análisis y documentación cinematográfica por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Actualmente es docente en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, donde imparte asignaturas relacionadas con el cine, la televisión y la literatura. De forma complementaria a su labor académica, se ha desempeñado como guionista y director de obras audiovisuales. Realizó una estancia posdoctoral en la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana y trabajó en varios medios, entre ellos, el periódico Reforma.
Sus investigaciones se han publicado en libros y revistas académicas en México, España y Portugal. Es miembro activo de la Asociación Cultural Española Trama & Fondo. Además de su trabajo como docente e investigador, recientemente se integró al FONCA como jurado y tutor para proyectos audiovisuales. Es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores de México.
