The audiovisual design of the sinister in the Dark series
Main Article Content
Abstract
Audiovisual production establishes a relationship with the audience that aims to produce a reaction in them. Whether it is humour, terror, compassion or other feelings, successfully achieving its objective requires the design of constructive processes that involve multiple elements such as theme, plot, dialogue, visual or sound treatment... The study of the sinister, due to Freud's interest in its artistic use, has found in the psychoanalytical approach one of the most elaborate proposals. Following his work, he offers a proposal that would be used by directors such as Hitchcock. This research studies how the series Dark draws on psychoanalysis to elaborate an essentially sinister audiovisual discourse. Dark is a series widely known for its use of philosophical, scientific and religious elements applied to concepts such as time, being, death, identity, freedom and desire. In this sense, we are not concerned with knowing what the psychological bases of the sinister are, but rather with knowing how psychoanalysis facilitates the design and discourse. Textual analysis shows how the elements highlighted by Freud in his analysis are systematically applied, forming the essential framework on which the other registers of content, narrative and audiovisuals are inscribed.
