Objectives: To analyze patients' perceptions about the communication skills of health professionals in an Emergency Department (ED), and their relation with anxiety, therapeutic compliance and the socio-demographic variables sex and age.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in the ED of the Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca from 12 to 18 hours from June 6 to 9, 2016. Different instruments were used to evaluate the patients' perception of communication, anxiety and therapeutic compliance.
Results: The sample consisted of 200 patients, with a greater proportion with age ≤ 20 years, of which 106 (53%) were males. A positive and statistically significant correlation (p <0.01) between communication and therapeutic compliance was obtained.
Conclusions: When patients perceive the communication of health professionals as adequate in the ED, there is better therapeutic compliance.
