Perception of COVID-19 and attitude towards protection measures in Mexico

Objetive. The objective of this study was to contrast the perception of COVID-19 and the attitude towards protective measures in Mexico with sociodemographic and personal variables to understand the behavior of the disease. Method. A cross-sectional study was conducted from May 18-31, 2020 with non-probabilistic convenience sampling with a sample of 969 people. Descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used. Results. The results showed significant differences in attitude toward protective measures in favor of age-60 and over, sex-female, gender-female, schooling-doctorate, occupation-retired and region-north. Significant difference was also found between perception about COVID-19 with age-60 and over, occupation-retired, religion-believer in God with religious affiliation and region-north. Conclusions. The perception of COVID-19 and the attitude towards protection measures is different in each segment of the population and a change in individual or collective behavior is important to avoid in the future the havoc that Mexico and other countries in the world experienced in the face of COVID-19.
