Abstract

Background and purpose: It has been shown that social support acts as a buffer against stressful events in university life. Social support is derived from the perception of potential support available from the network of people such as family, friends, and others. Therefore, the importance of validating a social support instrument in the university context due to the specific factors that the student faces at the university. The present study arises from the psychometric properties of the scale of perception of social support in Peruvian university students. Materials and methods: A total of 746 students (405 women and 341 men) between 18 and 29 years old (Mage = 20.67, SD = 2.76) from 7 university courses participated. Results: The confirmatory analysis that verified a satisfactory fit in the 3-factor model with 2 correlated errors (χ2 = 267.8, df = 85, p < 0.01, CFI = .95, RMSEA = .05 [CI90% .05, .06]); SRMR = .05). Reliability was performed by the Omega coefficient (ω), adequate values were reported in the dimensions of family (.82), friends (.84) and others (.72). Conclusions: It is concluded that the Peruvian version of social support has adequate evidence of validity and reliability in Peruvian university students.
