«—no matter how hard you try to look straight... TWISTED GESTURES, INVERTED PRACTICES AND WEIRD METHODOLOGIES. »
Edit: Tatiana Sentamans and Daniel Tejero (consolidated research group FIDEX, UMH).
The aim of «—no matter how hard you try to look straight...» is to emphasise the partiality of academic research in the arts from critical perspectives where we situate ourselves and in which we recognise ourselves as a group. Especially since the 1980s, feminist critique has challenged the universality of science and contributed profoundly to revolutionising how processes of knowledge production are defined. Particularly in the philosophy of science or philosophy of knowledge field, it has been questioned whether or not there is a feminist epistemology, that is, ways of producing knowledge from feminism, from critical theories. The debate between Harding (2004 [1987]) and Haraway (1991 [1988]), and the significant contributions of those known as Radical Women of Colour, including such important names as Gloria Anzaldúa, Chela Sandoval, Cherrie Moraga and Audre Lorde, are fundamental in this respect. From this perspective, in publications such as Cuerpos/sexualidades heréticas y prácticas artísticas (GVA 2010) or MUECA, conversaciones sobre metodologías torcidas (Bellaterra 2023); in the AAAA* - II International Speculative Congress: Art, Alliances, Affections and Something More* (UMH 2022); in exhibitions such as El Aula Invertida (Fundación La Posta 2014); in the design and management of the master's degree MUECA : S (since 2017), in the CIA-UMH laboratory 1 “Cultural projects, artistic practices and feminist and cuir/queer politics + visual culture”, or in the homonymous line of its new Doctoral Programme in Artistic Creation, reverberate “twisted gestures, inverted practices and strange methodologies” that the FIDEX group has activated over the last 17 years.
In this sense, we are interested in receiving proposals that question the following areas:
- Models and methods of research in the arts from critical perspectives (feminist, cuir/queer, decolonial, anti-racist, cripp, etc.). Methodological fictions for cultural production and the creation of meaning —and for the study of its forms— from critical perspectives. Manoeuvres and tools for the critical artistic and cultural projects development.
- Critical histories and memories of social movements for civil rights (our area of specialisation is the struggles sustained by feminisms and LGTBIQ+ movements, but we want to continue learning). Post-colonial and de(s)colonial thinking. Social, cultural and technological referents of contemporary cultural and artistic practice (in the area of specialisation we describe). Relations between contexts and visual culture. Visual discourses, iconographies and contemporary mythologies within the framework of feminist and cuir/ queer studies from intersectional perspectives.
- Artistic and cultural practices linked to political discourses and emancipatory social struggles: languages, procedures, media and materials. Relationships (cause-effect) between power, culture, representation, representativity and visibility (as the political incidence of those who represent and are represented), and the production of meaning.
- Critical pedagogies of the arts (from a sensitising, egalitarian and inclusive perspective). Transdisciplinary methodological tools for working between different artistic, cultural and disciplinary fields (from the approach of critical theories): integrative research forms; comparative studies strategies.
Deadline for submissions: October 6, 2024.
