Abstract

The editorial situates the monographic issue Imagining Futures. Precarious Times and Critical Narratives within a context of overlapping systemic crises in which capitalist realism and the intrusion of Gaia constrain political imagination, and proposes art as an epistemic device capable of generating critical temporalities and sustainable futures. Drawing on authors such as Stengers, Fisher, Le Guin, Morton and Haraway, it understands imagination as an embodied and situated social practice that articulates precariousness, collaboration and community in the face of contemporary acceleration and extractivism. The twelve contributions are organised around critical temporalities, structural precariousness and narratives of resistance, and address autoethnographic methodologies, critical fictions, experimental pedagogies and digital visual cultures as spaces of collective imagination and as fields for reconfiguring the distribution of the sensible.
