La Mar de Ellas: Ocean Culture, Gender, and Inequalities in the Marine Sphere. An Approach Through Audiovisual Narrative

Abstract

The XII “Fortaleciendo Alianzas” Conference, held on March 13th at the University of Murcia, included the screening of the documentary La Mar de Ellas as part of its program focused on Mediterranean fisheries.
The short film, developed within the ThinkInAzul project, presents testimonies from women connected to the sea, fishers, net makers, vessel owners and scientists, highlighting their experiences, knowledge and trajectories within a traditionally male-dominated sector.
This paper analyses the documentary from the perspective of Ocean Literacy, understood as a framework that integrates knowledge, values and social relationships in connection with the ocean. Through an audiovisual narrative approach, La Mar de Ellas is presented as a non-formal educational tool that enables the visibility of structural inequalities, acknowledges non-hegemonic forms of knowledge, and contributes to a more complex and situated understanding of the relationship between society and the marine environment.
