Abstract

Introduction: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common tumours. The impact on the functionality and quality of life of these patients is enormous. However, the emotional impact has not been analysed as much. Prehabilitation can help to address this major impact.

Objective: To quantify the impact on the functionality and quality of life of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

Methods: Observational cross-sectional study of all patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer and undergoing surgery in a tertiary hospital over a calendar year.

Results: A total of 127 patients were included, 68.5% were male. The most frequent tumour staging according to the AJCC classification was IIIB. Regarding quality of life as measured by the SF-12, a score of 48.18 was obtained for the SF-12 MCS and 51.79 for the SF-12 PCS. Regarding functionality, a mean score of 464.54 was observed for the 6MWT, 9.20 for the TUG and 52.27 for the PIM. Statistically significant differences were found between 6MWT and staging (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Patients affected by colorectal cancer experience a great impact on functionality and quality of life that require a multidisciplinary approach that includes prehabilitation to mitigate these effects, reducing the costs and mortality of this pathology.
