Having a chronic illness (CD) in adolescence can increase anxious and depressive symptoms. Emotional skills can buffer this impact. The aim was to analyse the relationship between emotional skills and emotional distress, and to observe differences between adolescents with and without CD. A total of 444 adolescents (50% with chronic illness) participated, 62.60% were female and aged 12-16 years. Emotional competences (ESCQ; Shoeps et al., 2019) and emotional distress (HADS; Valero-Moreno et al., 2019) were assessed. Elevated levels of anxiety, depression and emotional distress, and moderate perception and understanding, expression and labelling, and emotion management and regulation were observed. Women and those with CD showed more anxiety, depression and emotional distress. Fewer emotional skills were associated with more anxiety, depression and emotional distress. The presence of CD is a risk factor, emotional skills a protective factor.
